Thriving in Motherhood: Leaning on God’s Wisdom Through Every Season

Blog by: Elyse Derian

Let’s be real. Motherhood is a wild ride! Some days feel like magic, but most involve a never-ending to-do list, chaos, mess, and spills, all wrapped up with the joy of raising little humans.

Whether you’re navigating sleepless nights, tackling toddler tantrums, or figuring out how to communicate with your teenager (without them rolling their eyes), one thing is certain: motherhood does not come with a manual.

That’s why it’s such a true gift to us as Christ-followers that our Heavenly Father has given us a manual for every aspect of our lives, through His Word and our dependence on Him.

In today’s world, it’s easy to turn to Google, parenting books, or social media for answers. But while advice is helpful, true wisdom comes from God. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Proverbs 3:5-6

The truth is, no book, expert, or parenting influencer can replace God’s perfect wisdom. He is the One who created our children, knows their hearts, and guides us as we raise them. So, how do we rely on His wisdom in motherhood? Let’s dive in.

Seek God First (Even Before Coffee!)

Sometimes, the days fly by between carpooling, errands, and chores, and prioritizing quiet time with God can often seem overwhelming. But spending even a few moments with Him can make all the difference. James 1:5 promises:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

James 1:5

God’s wisdom is available to us—we just need to ask! Whether it’s during morning prayer, listening to worship music in the car, or reading a Bible verse during carpool lines, making time for God allows His wisdom to shape our motherhood. Even starting every day with a breath prayer: “Lord, give me wisdom today,” refocuses our minds and hearts to seek Him first.

Depend on God When You Feel Unqualified

Do you ever feel like you don’t have what it takes to be a good mom? I have more moments like this than I can count.

Every mom has moments of doubt. Maybe you feel like you don’t have all the answers or worry you’re not doing enough. But here’s the good news: You don’t have to have it all figured out—God does.

The reality is what gets in the way most of experiencing the abundance of God’s wisdom and Grace is who we are. When we rely on our own strength and worldly wisdom, we miss out on involving God in our parenting and giving us the words, the decision-making, and the strength to be the woman and the mom that glorifies Him!

Lean on God When You Face Tough Decisions

From discipline to extracurricular commitments to schooling choices, motherhood is full of big (and small) decisions. It’s easy to second-guess yourself or feel pressured by what others are doing. But God’s wisdom is greater than opinions or trends.

Isaiah 30:21 reminds us:

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’

Isaiah 30:21

When we seek God’s wisdom, He will guide us—not always with a loud voice, but through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and peace in our hearts. Invite God into your decisions. He desires to…

Teach Your Kids to Rely on God’s Wisdom Too

One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is teaching them to seek God’s wisdom for themselves.

Our kids won’t always come to us for answers, but if we point them to God now, they’ll know where to turn when they need guidance later. We can use the small, everyday moments to remind them of the source of true wisdom. Through each heartbreak, frustration, celebration, or sorrow – make a practice of pointing your kids to Christ to ask for comfort, guidance, and direction for each moment of their life.

No matter what season of motherhood you’re in, God’s wisdom is always available. When you feel lost, turn to Him. When you need guidance, seek Him first. You are not alone in this journey—God is with you, and He is faithful.

If you would like to learn more about thriving in the midst of your season of motherhood, listen to this Spotify conversation about Christian joy. Jenny Rodriguez, a pastor’s wife and homeschool mom, shares her insights and experiences with Candace Nassar, founder of MomQ. She emphasizes that joy is not just a feeling of happiness, but an energy and strength that comes from deep within, regardless of circumstances. Jenny highlights the importance of spending time with God, practicing gratitude, and cultivating a spirit of joy in daily tasks. She also discusses the challenges she faced while living in Japan and how she found joy in the midst of loneliness and cultural differences. Jenny encourages moms to prioritize margin in their schedules and celebrate moments as a family.

How to Create Spiritual Rhythms for Your Family

Perhaps the most encouraging place to begin is with one small habit — trusting God to use faithfulness in ordinary moments over time. Spiritual rhythms don’t require perfection — just intentionality. As you align your family’s daily rhythms with God’s presence, He will do the forming work.

How to Cultivate Thankfulness in My Family

God certainly cares about our problems!
He knows the pressures we face, and He doesn’t feel pleasure watching us fight wearily through each day. While we shouldn’t minimize our difficulties, it’s important to remember that God is bigger than any problem we face. Taking our eyes off Jesus to focus on our problems is a tactic from the enemy to keep us from experiencing the abundant life. It’s important to bring our hardships to God, but it’s equally important to thankfully remember all He’s done for us in the past. Acknowledging His past provision reminds us of His good plan to provide for us in the future.

Parenting with Courage: Choosing God’s Way Over the World’s Way

Some days, parenting feels like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces.
You plan, you pray, you do everything “right,” and then life throws a curveball. A surprise diagnosis. A sudden move. A schedule that turns upside down. And suddenly, the world seems to have all the answers, but none of them align with how God is leading your family. This is where bold faith comes in, choosing to trust God, even when your instincts—or everyone else’s opinions—tell you to panic.

When You Want to Quit: Learning to Trust God in the Hard Places

In our culture, we worship comfort and success. We avoid “hard.” We chase easy. Who wants to feel pain? And yet, you and I both know the ache of wanting to quit when life presses in. It’s universal.
Athletes understand this truth: without training, there is no victory. Muscles only strengthen under resistance. Lungs only expand under strain. And hearts only grow resilient when pushed to their limit.
Life is no different. We will face hardship. The real question is: how will we respond? Will we run toward God, or run from Him?
As believers, we are called to become like Christ in both conduct and character. And that kind of character is forged in the fire of suffering. Not when life feels easy, but when it feels impossibly heavy.
